Garry Denis

{{|Name

Garry Denis (born Garrison Marcos Dennisson December 29, Year 12 in Los Angeles, California, United States) is an African-American guitarist, singer, composer, and bassist currently with the band Hiking Metal Punks He is known for his participation in a several small, short-term heavy metal bands throughout North America. He grew up in the San Francisco Haight-Asbury district during the mid-late Year 20s. He currently resides in New York, New York but his citizenship is officially Helsinki, Finland.

Childhood and Beginning

Garry Denis first made his appearance in Popomundo on 6/28/2007.

Garry Denis was born to popular early Year 10s socialite Maria Dennisson and folk guitarist Garry Starbeam (Garrison Morales), the two never marrying. Growing up, Garry pursued judo and violin, however by his early teens an interest in thrash metal lead to him dropping classical music and pursuing singing and guitar. In high school he regularly got low grades but excelled in music and history. After graduating the bottom of class at Cabrillo High School, he took jobs as a store associate at several music stores and busked on the weekend.

Career

Early Career

After some practice and encouraging remarks from passerbys about his solid guitar playing, he rounded up the confidence to tryout for a band during the late Year 20s. He usually appeared before Los Angeles and Mexico City bands, but found no success in landing place with any of them. Annoyed, but determined he began writing his own songs and decided to become a solo artist and formed the band power metal band Axis of Awesome in June Year 30. He made Garry Denis his stage name in honor of his mother, but the project fell through rather quickly and he joined metal band Filthy Angels alongside band founder Annie Johnson. He left that band as well the month and formed what would be his third band in a two month period, Dragonfier. Dragonfier lasted a little longer and was a period where Denis wrote quite a bit of music, but he abandoned the project in October of Year 32. It was during his early career that Garry met best friend and one time band mate Adam Sohn, bassist and backup singer for Backfyre.

RAMEN-ACTION-MAN

In mid Year 34, Garry moved to Mexico City and formed the solo project RAMEN-ACTION-MAN with friend Scott Kellen. The band was one of two band that lasted over three months. RAM played mostly power metal and thrash throughout the Los Angeles and Mexico City areas. After Scott left the band, Garry moved operations to Toronto, Canada. Playing throughout the US and Canada he slowly built a following for his much improved guitar playing and singing ability before abruptly disbanding the project in early Year 35.

Post RAMEN-ACTION-MAN

At the open of Year 35, Garry joined several bands. These included: New World Order, Katatonic Reality, and Scott Kellen's Los Angeles thrash metal project, F*ck Öff And Die. He also formed a solo project called Killdozer which lasted all of a month, but played often in the US.

Garry Denis' Egotistical Solo Project

He moved to New York City in late Year 36 and after having the fire lit under him by a black metal artist, he formed the band Garry Denis' Egotistical Solo Project or ESP and began tour frantically which boosted his popularity a bit and got him out of his funk. With the one man ESP, he reached into the UK, Europe, Australia, and the Middle/South East Asia. In early Year 37, he disbanded ESP (then named Heavy Metal SUMO) after finishing up recording the EP New Wave of Sonic Metal, confused by his own often jumbled and rest depraving schedule.

Post Garry Denis' ESP

After desolving ESP, Garry Denis caught up on rest in New York City. He continued his practice and is looks to join another band as a member and not a leader, hoping to put his “guitar virtuoso level skills” and singing to use with a stable band.

Katatonic Reality and The Bastard Son

A few days after leaving ESP, Garry Denis joined New York City metal band Scarred Heart as lead singer and lead guitarist. He later left that band and jumped amongst several smaller bands–the two best known ones being the defunct Katatonic Reality and The Bastard Son. His time in The Bastard Son alongside main leader Gary Fletcher saw him improve as a singer and learn band management skills, a part of touring he tended to shun. He also released his first full length album with a band while with The Son. He later left to pursue a more laid back act.

Hiking Metal Punks

Around the Spring of 45, Garry formed a new band called Hiking Metal Punks. This project–which has proven to be his main one thus far is a blackened speed/power metal act that uses Garry's new found vocal delivery. He recently added bassist Jody Walker to the then solo project and is currently in the mists of a heavy tour after the release of two EPs and a full length album all between the summer and fall of 45.

Musical Style

Garry Denis is known for being heavily involved in metal music and hasn't really pursued any other style of music. The subgenres he is most associated with are power metal, speed metal, thrash, and traditional heavy metal…although for a time he did go into symphonic metal.

Guitar Playing

Denis is what is called a “shred guitarist” and tends to play very fast passages and aggressively. He is known mostly for sweep-picking and playing either lead or rhythm guitar. He also plays bass, but rarely and only when the need for one is present.

Singing

Garry Denis is known for utilizing different vocal techniques and styles depending on the song. For instance with thrashier, faster paced pieces he uses a mixture of death growls and occassionally rasps. For more epic pieces he uses a kind of deep bellow. In either pieces he tends to throw in some of his signature falsetto stylings.

He is a baritone-range singer.

Song Writing

Denis' early work was considered crude and poorly worded. Most publications considered the songs to be not worth listening to. As his years on the metal scene continued, Denis tightened up his writing and began fine tuning his lyrical imagery of fantasy, metal worship, and destruction. In more recent years he has slowed down his writing and has focused more on performing and perfecting previously created songs for live audiences.

Image and Status

Reputation

Garry Denis is considered either a nice guy or a promiscuous person by most. Despite the personal opinion on him, Garry is considered quite talented, but not that consistent with bands as he will often up and leave a band after a month or two. It is believed if he can stay with a band we would experience more success than he already has. Popularity-wise, he is considered a very sub-cult artist as he often plays smaller clubs with big set-lists and some under rehearsed songs. He is also considered quite dependable at getting to a gig.

Appearance

Garry Denis tends to wear a wild afro and a scraggly beard. He also wears leather jackets with pins of his favorite bands (mostly Necronomicon and Dragonlance). He tends to wear torn blue jeans, black spandex pants, and combat boots. Generally metalhead wear. He is said to have a pretty mean battle jacket.

Endorsed Gear

Garry Denis plays a black and red custom ESP Standard Series Viper-7 that has “Kristina” on it in red as well as red pentagram and inverted crucifix decals. He also sits his microphone on a special base stand that resembles a skull and bones. He occassionally plays a black ESP Standard Series Viper-414 (with the same red decals)–when a bass player is needed.

He uses a Marshall Vintage Modern amp during smaller gigs and a Shure SM57 mic. The mic often sits on a mic stand that features a skull with occassional “smoking skull” theatrics.

Personal Life

Garry Denis resides in Sao Paulo, Brazil and is reportedly considering changing his citizen to the country. He has residences in Los Angeles, CA and Helsinki, Finland–the latter he rarely visits. He was known to be romantically involved with Kristina Amy Harvey around Year 33-35 or so. He fond of kittens and loves to collect lucha libre masks and professional wrestling DVDs. He is actually trained as a wrestler having completed training in spring of Year 45, but never really had the time to pursue it as an active career.
