She was born in Los Angeles and learned to play the guitar as a small child. She dropped out of school before turning 16 and started off her music career with friends Leeanna Graham and Dia Chamberlain. Their band The Lipsticks would play together for many years. When Etta reached her twenties she wanted to try new things. She left her beloved band to go solo with the rock act Miss Edie Malone, which she has stuck to ever since.

Etta Begley's personal life has had many ups and downs. As a young woman she met the musician Chucho Pibernat, with whom she fell in love with. During one of his tours, Chucho's tourbus was involved in an accident, and tragically he died with it. Etta was devastated, and in the middle of all her pain she met Rod Brinson. She rushed into a serious relationship with him hoping he would take away her pain. They got engaged, but when Etta realized that Rod was just a substitute for Chucho, she called off the engagement.

Even though Etta didn't seem to believe in finding Mr. Right anymore, her biological clock was ticking. She had difficulty getting pregnant, and it was really hard for her. Her best friend Elisabeth Adolfsson stepped in to help. She was looking for someone to adopt her son Darko Adolfsson and daughter Rubella Adolfsson, and she knew what kind of pain Etta was going through. She asked Etta to adopt the two kids, and Etta was absolutely ecstatic about it. She welcomed the two kids with open arms. However, about the same time Etta finally succeeded in getting pregnant with the help from her good friend Jefferson Millot. Nine months later she gave birth to Naia Begley. A few years later her friend Thorsten Joyce would help her get pregnant for the second time. That pregnancy resulted in Dylan Begley.

Just when Etta had given completely up on love she met a man who would turn her life upside down. His name was Dean Bunce. For the first time since Chucho's death she felt pure love. After having dated for a year the couple welcomed their first child together - a little boy named Julian Begley. Dean and Etta got married on Popogeddon, and later on they added to their family when Etta gave birth to their daughter Aurélie Bunce. At one point Etta realized that she was not the monogamous type. She was positive that Dean wouldn't accept an open relationship. She refused to hurt him by going behind his back, so instead she told Dean she could not go on with the relationship. After five years of marriage the couple divorced.
