Officially opened on September 2nd, 2009, Sanctuary Music was a long standing record company in Toronto formally known as, Castle Records. Castle Records was owned and operated by a company called Pink Flamingo, owned by Dana Isaak. Dana, decided that running the studio was becoming too much effort for the limited return after her last CEO, Dean Royle, passed away and put the business up for sale.
Oddly, she didn’t have to look too far to find a buyer. Her husband, Danny Harris, after acquiring his long time friend, Neil Solomon’s, company Aurora Borealis Corporation, put in a bid and won the auction. Danny's stated intention was to bring heavy metal to Toronto and Canada and be focused on developing local talent and helping international talent work the North American markets. Danny sat on the location for several months prior to beginning an effort to revitalize the property. On August 25th, 2009, the name change went into effect and Castle Records became Sanctuary Music.
Within a week, Danny had hired new staff, including CEO Nigel Wood, to begin improving the location and getting it to a running point. September 2nd, 2009, Sanctuary Music officially opened its doors and within a couple of weeks began running the operation to a perfect quality.
The first full album officially released under the new Sanctuary Music label was DanaI’s, Something About Today, marking Danny’s wife’s return to the music market, by selling out. The first single came from Couch Potato, and act that Danny worked heavily with when he was CEO of London’s Evil Angel Records.
Many of the acts from Evil Angel Records followed Danny to his new label and have signed long term contracts and Sanctuary Music changed the focus from Castle Records pop genre to a heavy metal genre approach.
